Resources for Parents During Remote Learning

  • The Parents' Guide to Google Classroom (also available in Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Bengali)- Google Classroom is used by teachers to communicate digitally with students during remote learning. Teachers share assignments, homework, newsletters and more with students and parents through this platform. This guide provides step by step support on how to use Google Classroom. 

  • Learn at Home: This document from the New YorkCity Department of Education supports parents in finding activities for all grade levels to do while remote learning. The website is available in multiple languages. 

  • School Virtually: School Virtually provides information for educators and parents as schools make a quick switch to distance and online learning. Going beyond lists of resources, School Virtually provides tips on designing online instruction, using technology tools, and supporting students with disabilities and language learners.

  • School's Out: A Parent's Guide for Meeting the Challenge: helpful recommendations to consider for children’s needs for structure, education, exercise, social contact, appropriate leisure time, and calm, rational explanations during the COVID-19 crisis. 

  • Daily Virtual Storytime Calendar of events from the Brooklyn Public Library offering a broad range of topics from poetry, opera, painting, support groups, English courses, Sign language introductory classes and more. All events are shown via Facebook and are available for children and families. 

  • NYPL Library Connect E-resources Online books, activities, and events from the New York Public Library available for parents and children. This includes access to e-books, research e-journals, online newspapers, and resources for young learners.

  • Guide to Google Translate (available in English and Spanish)- Resource to translate any guides, assignments, sentences and/or individual words as needed.


Explaining the Pandemic to Your Child

  • Just for Kids: A Comic Exploring the New Coronavirus: available comic is Spanish and Chinese explaining the Coronavirus situation to kids. The comic can also be printed and folded into a zine version to add to families’ book collection. 

  • Guide to Helping Families Cope with Coronavirus [PDF] The National Child Traumatic Stress Network provides resources that will help families think about how an infectious disease outbreak might affect their families—both physically and emotionally—and what you can do to help their family cope. 

  • Talking to Children About COVID-19: A Parent Resource [PDF] - National Association of School Psychologists specific guidelines to support families talking to their children about the Coronavirus outbreak. It provides communication recommendations and further information to best understand the pandemic
